A Gripping Tale of Adventure and Transition in Africa
Set against the backdrop of Africa's move towards freedom, Joseph Mahoney's story is a compelling narrative filled with adventure, personal struggles, and the enduring human emotions of friendship and love. Mahoney, the last Colonial Commissioner in the Kariba Gorge, faces the challenge of easing the transition to a new era of rule, all while grappling with the complexities of his own life.
Amidst the opposition, hatred, and violence that permeate the region, Mahoney must confront the accusation of murder against his servant, Samson, while also dealing with the growing distance between himself and Suzie, the woman he loves deeply. Yet, these personal matters are further complicated by the simmering undercurrent of violence and revenge that threatens to engulf the countryside at any moment.
The author of this captivating tale, John Gordon Davis, was born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and educated in South Africa. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, financing his studies by working as a deckhand on British merchant ships and the Dutch whaling fleet in the Antarctic. Continuing his education, Davis went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws degree while serving as a judge's clerk in Rhodesia.
Called to the Bar, Davis was appointed as an assistant public prosecutor in the Magistrate's Courts during the tumultuous years leading up to Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence. He later assumed the role of Crown Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers, both in Rhodesia and subsequently in Hong Kong.
Davis' literary career took off when his debut novel, "Hold My Hand I'm Dying," became an instant bestseller. This success was followed by numerous other bestselling novels, solidifying his reputation as a talented storyteller.
In addition to his prolific writing, Davis was an experienced seaman. Together with his Australian-born wife, Rosemary, he sailed around the world in a series of yachts. Upon retirement, the couple traveled extensively, and from their home in a charming old Spanish farmhouse in Andalucia, Spain, Davis also ran highly successful writing courses for both aspiring and established authors.
Sadly, John Gordon Davis passed away in 2014, leaving behind a rich literary legacy that includes several unpublished novels he had been working on even as he supposedly slowed the pace of his writing. His captivating storytelling and his unique perspective, shaped by his experiences in Africa and beyond, have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the literary landscape.
